"We send food all over the world."

Ian Smith, Caledonian Curry

Scotland is well known for a variety of quality fresh foods, from fish and shellfish to Aberdeen Angus beef and a wide range of organic produce, but curries?

The answer is yes and the proof lies with Caledonian Curry, based in Bonar Bridge, Sutherland. Producers of frozen curries, relishes and sauces, the company sells its products all over the world.

Ian Smith started the business in 1997 creating gourmet ready meals using local venison, beef, game, shellfish and lamb. His unique range shuns the use of additives and is gluten free.

Ian explains: “I started with local curry nights, parties and anniversaries. One thing led to another really. Curries are popular, but a key element of what we believe is that good food can be frozen. Because we do not use any artificial preservatives, blast freezing is a healthy option. We can produce foods just as people would like to cook at home, if they had the time and the ingredients.

“I have also developed a range of chilli relishes and sauces. Our staff has grown, we have won the ‘Food from Scotland Excellence Award’ amongst others, and are now expanding into other markets. The internet has allowed us to access international markets by selling our ambient products online – we have just sent another order of ‘After Burns’ to Montana!”

An example of the innovative ways Caledonian Curry serves its customers can be found in the shops of two of the biggest football clubs in Scotland – Rangers and Hibernian.

Says Ian: “We make the official sauces for both clubs. The sauces are on sale in Club outlets and online. It gives us a national shop window.”

From what started as a hobby for Ian, Caledonian Curry now has its curries, sauces and relishes in over 50 retail outlets and they have branched out via e-commerce, buying supplies and selling their products via the internet - www.caledoniancurry.co.uk - and using broadband to the full.

The business keeps Ian very busy but he finds time to enjoy living in Sutherland with his wife and three kids.

“Educational standards are very good. The local Primary School in Bonar has just had an excellent HM Inspectors report and is a very happy little school. My daughters enjoy traditional music and have taken opportunities to play the fiddle, tin whistle and clarsach.

“As a family we love living here. The stunning scenery and landscape gives a unique sense of freedom and well being. It is a beautiful part of the world to raise a family and run a business.”
